The Vasant Natya Utsav at the NCPA will present 5 plays, 3 of which will premiere in Mumbai. The festival will also showcase an interesting mix of poetry sessions, discussions and more.
After the success of NCPA Pratibimb (Marathi Natya Utsav), NCPA Centrestage (theatre festival), The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), one of India's best known arts and culture institution is all set to host their first ever Gujarati Natya Utsav - Vasant. The NCPA Centre for the Promotion of Arts and Culture (CPAC) will be presenting this three day festival starting 18th March to 20th March 2011.
With Vasant, the NCPA continues to give impetus to its mission of promoting the best of performing arts by presenting festivals with regional connect and giving platform to local talent. Gujarati theatre has continued to hold strong the dramatic fervor of stage groups and audiences alike. It has been a significant contributor to the cultural landscape of Mumbai. The festival hopes to bring to the fore the out-of-the-usual, exciting and inventive side of Gujarati theatre.
Speaking on the occasion, NCPA Chairman Khushroo N Suntook, said, "Gujarati theatre has been a significant contributor to the cultural landscape of Mumbai, and through Vasant, we want to enrich it further. Vasant will be an annual event. The festival will focus on plays with offbeat subjects and genres. Usually, offbeat theatre faces the problem of lack of suitable venues and audiences. We plan to introduce bigger and better Gujarati plays for our audiences going forward. Vasant will contribute to bringing vibrancy to the Gujarati theatre scenario."
The proud organiser of the festival, Deepa Gahlot, Head Programming (Theatre and Film) says "We're trying to focus on theatre in different languages with events all year through. The idea is to take the NCPA's role as a promoter of theatre to the next level by bringing the best plays by Gujarati theatre groups from different cities to Mumbai's audiences."
