Athol Fugard, one the finest playwrights of our times, passed away at 92. He was known for his politically outspoken plays that were critical of his native South Africa's apartheid regime.
Paying tribute to Fugard, South Africa's Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie said he was "a fearless storyteller who laid bare the harsh realities of apartheid through his plays."
Starting with THE CELL in 1956, followed by the internationally acclaimed, THE BLOOD KNOT, in 1961, in which he also acted, Fugard wrote more than 30 plays over a career spanning 70 years.
He well-known works include BOESMAN AND LENA, SIZWE BANZI IS DEAD, THE ISLAND, MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS, HELLO AND GOODBYE, VALLEY SONG, to name a few.
The world of theatre has lost a master.
