On February 25, Mithibai College in Mumbai witnessed the grand launch of two remarkable books-MUMBAI MURMURINGS and COTTON 56, POLYESTER 84 & COMRADE KUMBHAKARNA. The inauguration was led by Jiya Somaiya, a student of philosophy, adding a fresh academic perspective to the event.
Renowned playwright Ramakrishnan Ramanathan, popularly known as Ramu Ramanathan, shared his nostalgic connection with Mithibai College through a heartfelt post on social media. He wrote, "I was Jiya's age when I wrote my first one-act play-I am I-for Mithibai College in 1987." This touching reflection highlighted his journey from a young playwright to an established name in Indian theatre.
Ramu Ramanathan is celebrated for his compelling and socially relevant plays, including MAHADEVBHAI, COTTON 56 POLYESTER 84, JAZZ, COMRADE KUMBHAKARNA, and POSTCARDS FROM BARDOLI. His works often explore political and cultural themes, making significant contributions to contemporary Indian theatre.
MUMBAI MURMURINGS: 213 TINY TALES of Theatre is a fascinating collection of behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Mumbai's theatre world. Structured alphabetically, each letter presents captivating stories linked by "Greenroom Gupshup," offering glimpses into theatre legends, iconic locations, and performances over the years.
COTTON 56, POLYESTER 84 & COMRADE KUMBHAKARNA showcases Ramu Ramanathan's sharp socio-political critique. These plays explore lost histories-mill workers' struggles and modern interpretations of ancient conflicts-challenging dominant power structures. Ramanathan's theatre blends humor, realism, and history seamlessly.
Both books are available at Prithvi Bookstore and on Amazon.
The playbook was printed at Avantika using the Canon ImagePress and published by Red River, ensuring high-quality production. The event at Mithibai College not only marked the unveiling of these books but also served as a moment of reflection on the legacy of Indian theatre and literature.
With the involvement of both young intellectuals and seasoned playwrights, this book launch was more than just an event-it was a bridge between generations of storytelling and artistic expression.
