Mumbai's theatre lovers are in for a treat as the renowned Surnai Theatre and Folk Arts Foundation, led by Ila Arun and KK Raina, presents AJAATSHATRU-a gripping Hindi adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's celebrated play, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. Mark your calendars for March 15, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Royal Opera House, Charni Road, for an evening of powerful storytelling, thought-provoking themes, and stellar performances.

For over a decade, the Ibsen Festival, in association with the Royal Norwegian Consulate General, has brought the legendary playwrights works to Indian audiences. Ila Arun, known for her exceptional ability to Indianize Ibsens narratives, has previously adapted classics like Peer Gynt, Hedda Gabler, and Ghosts. AJAATSHATRU is no different-it seamlessly blends Ibsens universal themes with Indias socio-cultural landscape, making the play both relatable and relevant.

A Story That Resonates Today More Than Ever

AJAATSHATRU is a tale of truth versus power, environmental responsibility versus political gain. Set in the fictional town of Sonepur, the play follows Dr. AJAATSHATRU (Gaurav Amlani), a medical officer appointed through the influence of his brother, Abhimanyu (Sonal Dabral), the towns mayor. The towns Brahma Kund, believed to have medicinal properties, attracts pilgrims and boosts the local economy. However, AJAATSHATRU discovers that the sacred water has been contaminated by industrial pollution, posing a serious health hazard.

When he attempts to expose the truth through the local newspaper, he faces opposition not only from his power-hungry brother but also from corrupt business interests, a complicit media, and a misled public. Labelled an enemy of the people, AJAATSHATRU finds himself fighting a lonely battle against a system that prioritizes profit over peoples well-being.

With its compelling narrative, the play highlights critical issues such as environmental degradation, political corruption, media manipulation, and the publics blind faith in religious beliefs. In todays world, where ecological crises and misinformation dominate headlines, AJAATSHATRU is more relevant than ever.

An Ensemble Cast That Brings the Drama to Life

Directed by the acclaimed KK Raina, this production boasts a stellar cast, including Abhishek Pandey, Vijay Kashyap, Guneet Singh, Aditi Sharma/Ishita Arun, and Shilpa Mehta/Prackriti Bhargava. Each performer adds depth and realism to their characters, making the battle of morality and truth even more gripping.

Spectacular Production and Direction

From its visually striking set and lighting design by Salim Akhtar to the evocative music and soundscapes by Sanjoy Dazz, AJAATSHATRU is a theatrical experience not to be missed. The play masterfully balances intense drama with satirical elements, making it both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.
