Theatre enthusiasts in Mumbai are in for an extraordinary experience as Shakespeare's classic tragedy, KING LEAR, is brought to life in a unique adaptation blending Shakespearean storytelling with Eurythmy, an expressive European movement-based theatre form making its Indian debut. This production is performed by the first group of Eurythmists trained by Eurythmy India, featuring artists from India, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Mumbai-based actors and classical musicians from Pune. A mesmerizing musical backdrop of live sitar and tabla, combined with piano compositions by György Sándor Ligeti and Sergei Rachmaninoff, enriches the experience.
According to a press note: For the first time, Indian theatre-goers will witness Eurythmy, an art form that integrates movement, rhythm, and music to create an immersive theatrical experience. This pioneering collaboration offers a fresh perspective on theatre and storytelling.
While staying faithful to Shakespeare's original language and themes, this adaptation infuses a distinct Indian essence, making it more relatable and engaging for local audiences.
KING LEAR explores power, betrayal, redemption, and love" universal themes that remain relevant across generations. The expressive visual storytelling and elegant movements ensure that even those unfamiliar with Shakespeare will find the performance accessible and impactful.
Eurythmy, developed by Rudolf Steiner over a century ago, is both a performance art and a path of self-discovery. It is an integral part of Steiner Waldorf education, with schools worldwide incorporating it into their curriculum.
Eurythmy India offers a five-year part-time training program, featuring five 10-day modules annually, supplemented with practice and online sessions. As the only institution of its kind in India, it is led by expert instructors in Eurythmy, Speech, and Drama, and follows the Steiner Waldorf curriculum. The program, conducted in English, attracts students from India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, and Iran, and is certified by the Goetheanum Section for Performing Arts in Dornach, Switzerland.
