BOY WITH A SUITCASE is a thought provoking play for the young and old alike, about adventure, travel and displacement. It is coming to Mumbai this month. The play is a co-production between the Ranga Shankara theatre in Bangalore and Schnawwl Theatre in Mannheim, Germany under the Wanderlust project of the German government. The production opened in Germany and in Bangalore in 2011 and it now comes back for a tour of India within the framework of "Germany and India 2011 - 12: Infinite Opportunities". The play is written by Mike Kenny and has been directed by Andrea Gronemeyer.
Though BOY WITH A SUITCASE has been designed and created for the young, it is essentially a play that is intended for people of all ages. It is as much for parents and educators as it is for children. Andrea Gronemeyer is one of Europe's best known theatre directors working specifically with children's theatre and with this play she strives to strike a balance between Eastern and Western aesthetics and drama, bringing out finely nuanced characters with layers of grey, lending to interpretation and re-interpretation for both actors as well as the audience. Live music by Bangalore's Konarak Reddy with M D Pallavi singing and Coordt Linke on the Percussion are added attractions.
The play will be performed at the NCPA on Friday, April 27 2012 at 7 pm. At Prithvi Theatre, it is part of the "Arts at Play" programme by Junoon and there will be four shows over two days on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, at 4 pm and 7 pm.
