Theatre producer-director Lillete Dubey revealed that her next drama JAYA, which is based on The Mahabharata for the twenty-first century, will open in February 2024 as a part of The Primetime Theatre Company's 33rd anniversary celebration.
"We had opened it nearly 25 years ago, that was written and composed by Sandeep Kanjilal (an MTech from IIT Delhi!), which was hugely successful, and which I'm reviving again now. We had to close it abruptly due to some tragic circumstances .But we are doing it now next year as part of our company's 33 year celebrations in Feb 2024.", The opera was in English with a little Hindustani and some Sanskrit." says an elated Lillete Dubey,
"We are now working on a new version keeping most of the script intact but with some small edits for reducing the length. The lyrics and script are exactly the same and the play is completely sung live like an opera." she continues.
"We are doing a completely new sound track but one that still retains a flavour of the rock opera genre, (while incorporating current musical sounds) some new choreography combining the same elements of Kalaripayattu, and other dance forms, together with the martial arts as before, and a tweaking of the original stage and costume design (which was much lauded at the time) to suit a modern, upgraded version of the production with a technically advanced design in terms of lights, sound and visual effects." she adds.
"It was considered a landmark production when it opened in 1998, and received much critical acclaim, and ran houseful for 40 shows!" she concludes.
Produced and directed by Lillete Dubey, JAYA is expected to premiere at the Bal Gandharva Rangmandir in Bandra, Mumbai from 10th to 18th February, 2024 and post that may travel to domestic and international venues too.
