Veteran theatre personality Vinay Apte expired on December 7, 2013. During his 40 years plus career in theatre, films, television and radio, Vinay Apte searched for talent and gave many performers a platform, some of whom are now leading names in the Marathi theatre and film fraternity and these include Mahesh Manjarekar, Sachin Khedekar, and Sunil Barve, among others.

After his untimely exit, many of his friends and colleagues got together to form the Vinay Apte Pratishthan, in a bid to carry further new experiments in theatre and create new talent. The Pratishthan has been registered with the charity commissioner.

The Pratisthan, in association with Sathye College, Vile Parle had organized 'Saptrang' in December 2014. Around 25 colleges from Mumbai and Thane had participated in the event.

The Pratishthan had also organised shows of award winning one-act plays at Shivaji Mandir on 7th December 2014.

On 17th June 2015, a program of poetry recital on social and political subjects was organised by the Pratisthan at Shivaji Mandir. Many Marathi theatre and film bigwigs like Dilip Prabhavalkar, Neena Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Ashok Naygavkar and Dr Mahesh Keluskar participated in this programme.

In May 2015, the Pratisthan organised a voice culture workshop at the P L Deshpande Academy, Prabhadevi. Senior Voice artists Ajit Bhure and Swati Subramanium conducted the workshop.

Now, the Pratisthan has planned a multilingual drama festival on 5th and 6th December 2015 to mark Vinay Apte's second death anniversary.
