Theatre Speaks

Naushil Mehta
Writer
[Gujarati, Hindi Theatre ]
"Theatre especially interests me, if it is in Gujarati. I hold a high regard for this language and it appalls me to see the dearth of original writing in it. Although Gujarati is my mother tongue, it remains for me an acquired language. I only learnt how to read and write in it when I was around twenty-two years of age. Having stayed in places where Gujarati was not spoken much, I never had the opportunity to learn it earlier. It was only after the popularity of my first play-NAUSHIL MEHTA AAPGAAT KARE CHE that I seriously took upon myself to be a writer and to learn the language well. As far as the current theatre scene in Mumbai goes, I must say that I am pleased with what is happening in Indian English Theatre. Writers like Ramu Ramanathan, Rahul Da Cunha and Vikram Kapadia have contributed much to the genre of Indian English Theatre. There is not much happening in Hindi theatre except for the work done by Naseer’s theatre group, ‘Motley’. Hindi again is one of the languages that I really enjoy and would like to see it flourish."
