Iago, from OTHELLO. Wish to play it sometime soon!
A play you would like to see filmed. Why?
The SEAGULL by Anton Chekhov. Most of his plays would lend very well to cinematic medium.
A novel/short story you would like to see on stage? Why?
I'm curious to see Manto's 'Toba Tek Singh' as a film since I've done a solo performance of same.
The most hilarious play you have seen
Any Ram Leela performance across the heart of India; nothing could replace that!
A play, which is over-hyped
None. Theatre needs more hype. Bring it on!
An important play (but ignored)
EINSTEIN by Mohan Maharishi
A passage from an important play that you can recite
'I didn't know what to do with myself as an actor. How to consume myself. After I came back home after meeting you I lay on the floor sweating and shaking. It was like being reminded again... What it would be like to really love a man... Really be with him! I was like an invalid or.... May be like a pregnant woman! Oh... these extra-ordinary fertilisations...',
This passage is from AN UNPOSTED LOVE LETTER; an adaptation of a short story/monologue by Doris Lessing.
How I wish I could perform it! Since the story is from a female point of view, and a superb one at that, I couldn't have done that. So I chose the next best possible... I directed it while Ankita Shrivastav brought it alive on stage.
A classical play that you should have read
Not a play but the treatise on drama - NATYASHASTRA. It's on my 'drum' list!
How do you regard the Mumbai theatre scene?
The theatre scene in Mumbai is mostly commercial because that's the social fabric of the city. And you can't BLAME IT ON YASHRAJ!
Have you read any interesting books/articles concerning the theatre?
Somerset Maugham's The Theatre.
If you have ever been a part of a theatre production/s, can you recall an event that was insightful, significant or simply humorous?
It was at a body and mind workshop on theatre during our Masters in Theatre at Chandigarh. For ten days my dear friend and I pretended to understand everything. Amidst these very complex theatre exercises we would crack up stuffing handkerchiefs into our mouths. I think we were too raw for that workshop then, of course we both grew up!
Can you think of a foreign production that you found remarkable? Why?
HANNAH AND HANNAH by a British troupe; for its balance of form and content.
Your favourite director/actor/music or set designer
Mohan Maharishi and Neelam Mansingh Choudhary. Both eminent theatre directors were our faculty at the Theatre Department at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Actor and Music Director: Piyush Mishra.
Set Designer: Mahendra Kumar.
A significant Indian production that you may have witnessed
BAWA JITTO by Balwant Thakur.
Life in the theatre without the humble batata-wada or the cutting chai... or can you recall the best gastronomic experience you've had in the precincts of the theatre to date?
I'm way too frugal (read problematic) as far as my food habits are concerned. At the same time theatre people being always unkempt and bankrupt is a clich. So... out of vengeance I splurge on the best of the brands, courtesy my credit card limit; and when the 'due date' comes in, I behave like an Ostrich!
Jokes apart... the best gastronomic experience for me is when actor, text, space and audience become one and make a great show. Hats off!
