Theatre Speaks

Cyrus DastoorI think the theatre scene in Bombay and the country in general is passing through a phase of transition and excitement. You have young and budding theatrists coming up with something new all the time and at the same time you have a whole lot of new kind of theatre evolving somewhere around.

With no offence to anyone, I strongly feel that the 90s saw a stagnation of the content being produced on the theatre circuit. You did have an odd piece of class coming out in the form of Mahatma Vs Gandhi or an I'm Not Bajirao but the undercurrents that you see today are much more colourful and exciting. And at the cost of sounding boastful, I feel happy about making a small contribution by popularising the concept of alternative venues. Well, they always existed in the good old days but never were they used so vigorously and freely for staging full-fledged productions.

I think today the time has come to break the monopoly of the few traditional venues and explore the more alternative canvasses. For long has theatre been shackled in the portals of the Prithvis and the NCPAs; it is time for theatre to rise and grow beyond this. It is time for the scenario to change and I think the time is ripe!
