TABIYAT Review
As the title suggests, TABIYAT is about evaluating and introspecting about various aspects of our health - physical, mental, psychological, interpersonal, sexual and more. This is done through many narrative techniques.
TABIYAT has all the intentions to be written well and to entertain the audience. However, an overdose of good intentions can also be a failing. The scenes, dialogues, when watched like a short trailer would look striking. But when put together it doesn't work too well. It can come across as too noisy. If the play can include many moments of slow reflection, it can work a lot better. There are such smart quips such as 'cook with benefits', and as an experiment, it is indeed worthwhile.
The actors are very competent. They are also cast well, with each looking distinct from each other. Mansi Joshi, Disha Salva, Harsh Joshi and Dharmendr Gohil do not leave you with a fault to find. Actors morph into beings and organs and keep the action high. It would be interesting to see what the play would be with actors of a different, subtle sensibility.
Satchit Puranik, the writer and the Manoj Shah, the director, deserve to have their intentions and capabilities acknowledged. The show was held in Prithvi House, the small venue, and that's the right place to try out an experiment. In the cycle of creation, experiments do go right and wrong. Theatre allows for course correction in further editions.
TABIYAT by Ideas Unlimited Production is a creation that has good ingredients and is a worthy exercise. It can be revisited based on audience feedback. It is full of good quips and phrases. It also talks to the audience. It is full of energy and characters try to put you in a good mood.
