SARENTA!!! Review
SARENTA is a piece about a man in his forties, going through various issues such as lack of dignity at work place, joblessness, the resulting crisis in relationship with wife, separation of parents and more.
Gagan Dev Riar delivers a masterclass in writing and acting with SARENTA. It grabs contemporary issues, includes wit and quips which are meaningful, and covers as much ground as a play can allow. The writing is such that several complex issues are often intertwined in a single sentence. To execute this well as an actor would be a very big challenge. Riar shows he can deliver them like very few can. He brims with emotion in the most quiet moments.
SARENTA is entertaining and can hold anyone's attention. A lot of good theatre can be traced to good fundamentals and being sincere to the craft. However, few performances go beyond perfecting technique. Riar crosses that milestone. Perhaps, he can do better by working on his fitness and give an even more expressive product.
The play is also bold and he strips off most of his clothes at one time, resulting in a hard hitting sequence.
The direction of the play by Bhagyashree Tarke lies in letting the writer and actor to take off without holding back anything. Sound, lights, setup is adequate. These can be made more elaborate if the performance is in a bigger venue.
SARENTA is relevant for the times and can be watched by all with interest.
