LAGHU is a performance of three stories. Ismat Chughtai's TI, Manav Kaul's SAPNA and Krishna Baldev Vaid's UDAAN make for a gratifying combination of stories.
SAPNA, performed by Jaimini Pathak, stands out for being riveting and contemporary in both plot and language. TIL, performed by Ishita Sharma, provides a literary touch and soaks you in Urdu. UDAAN, performed by Girija Oak, begins the play and allows you to be put at ease with the format.
The performers do their job with precision and bring the text to the audience faithfully. This edition was staged at Studio Tamasha, which provides the perfect lighting effects. The hall goes completely dark and quiet in the beginning and the end of each episode. This absorbs the audience, a rarity in Mumbai. Very basic props are used in the performance. The stress is on reciting the stories with precision. Sounds are also used only for brief moments. Overall, the play is created with strong fundamentals - of bring the focus back to the written word.
A special mention should be made about the episode written by Manav Kaul. SAPNA is about a man and woman who have various phases of friendship and relationship in which dreams are created and lost. The way it is written seamlessly makes the audience want to know what happens next. This episode adds the maximum entertainment value to LAGHU.
In terms of performance, Ishita Sharma makes for an assured performer for the literary writing of Ismat Chughtai. The episode is about a beauty spot of a woman and how it leads to various situations such as a lover finding out that another man has seen it already. Girija Oak performs her piece with perfection. Her performance could have been better utilized if the story was more entertaining and contemporary.
All in all, LAGHU has utilused a successful format that caters to the short attention span of today's times.
