KUCH BAATEIN KUCH GEET, 100 KE HABIB was a tribute to the legendary playwright-director-actor, and leader of the Naya Theatre group, the late Habib Tanvir on the occassion of his 100th birth anniversary.
Tanvir's unparalleled contribution to Indian theatre was celebrated through the medium of this tribute where various artistes performed his songs from his famous plays at the Prithvi Theatre Festival.
The artistes presented this tribute under the guidance of his beloved disciple Rana Pratap Sengar, who spent more than a decade in Tanvir's tutelage. He organized the show and interacted with the audience as though he was Habib Tanvir himself. Amar Singh, another beloved disciple of Tanvir, came all the way from Bhopal to guide the artistes along with the composition of songs. During the tribute, he accompanied the artists on the harmonium. The lights and sound team did a fabulous job of complimenting the entire performance and the tribute left a mark on the viewers.
In this production, the team borrowed from five songs from Habib's various cherished plays. Before beginning the songs, the team shared joyful anecdotes and incidents from previous shows with Habib Tanvir.
Over the years, Habib Tanvir has become an idol for people who aspire to conquer the world of acting and performing. He is remembered as a witty man who could make anyone laugh. He went on to start the Naya Theatre group which has produced several folk performances, chronicling the lives and times of the people of Chhattisgarh. In this production, we heard songs from CharandasChor, a play inspired from VijayadanDetha's Rajasthani folktale – narrating the trifles of a foolish policeman. Agra Bazaar remains one of his most beloved plays, a production that pioneered in content and form in a world that was still replete with inspirations from western theatre. Unlike his contemporaries, Tanvir took to the streets and celebrated Urdu poet Nazir Akbarabadi through his verses. It was a delight to hear renditions of songs from AGRA BAZAAR in the retrospective piece. It is always joyous to commemorate voices from the past – especially artists like Tanvir who have always upheld the voice of India's heartland.
