UMRAO JAAN

UMRAO JAAN

By MTG editorial

Director : Varun R. Sharma

Umrao Jaan is a play adapted from Umrao Jaan Ada which is in Urdu novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, first published in 1899. Directed by Mr. Varun Sharma, the play tells the story of a courtesan and poet ‘Umrao Jaan’ who lived in Faizabad as Ameeran.

The story talks about the rivalry between Ameeran’s father and Dilaavar Khan and how Dilaavar Khan makes a plan to trap little Ameeran, throwing her into the embroiled business of prostitution. The play embarks on a new journey of the infamously famous Ameeran who grows up to be known as Umrao Jaan and her love story with Nawab Sultan.

This dysfunctional love story takes it’s own path of ups and downs; satisfaction and sorrows; unison and partition. The play talks about the pain and agony of prostitutes and the way all these issues hamper their normal life. The play depicts how prostitutes sabotage themselves. The society too makes their survival difficult and despicable
