LAILA MAJNU

LAILA MAJNU

By MTG editorial

A love poetry, stretching way back, the story of Layla Majnun is retold yet again as a narrative poem and a play, tracing the lives of two young people, both hemmed in by what was around them; the people, the places, and the nature of the nomadic Bedu society in the early years of the 7 Century A.D in the Middle East. The story begins at a point where the chorus, a group of women, introduces this tale to the audience. They give a brief background of how love blossomed in the hearts of these two young people and that its passion and intensity make people think that Queys is possessed by an evil spirit. Next, we find Layla's parents discussing how this love between them (Queys and Layla) has brought the family nothing else but shame and that Layla must now be kept at home and groomed to become the wife of some honorable man belonging to a respectable family.

Queys convinces his father Sayyid to go and speak to Layla's parents and put forward his proposal to marry Layla. Sayyid, a man of wealth, power, and prestige, who desired a son and heir and was blessed with Queys after several years of marriage, loves him dearly. For his son's sake, he goes and speaks to Layla's father who refuses this proposal. Disheartened Queys refrains from seeing her and he begins to slip into melancholy. His father takes him on a pilgrimage to Mecca, to seek God's help in freeing him, but Majnun strikes the Kaaba and cries, none of my days shall ever be free of this pain
