KATHA KAHI EK JALE PED NE

The Play "Katha Kahi Ek Jale Ped" is a play written by Bhanu Bharti, based on the Japanese story of Hajime Kijima. Its first performance took place in 1981 in the open courtyard of the Lalit Kala Academy in Delhi. If someone is inspired to write a play, they should understand that the pressure is immense, and this creation is the result of that intense pressure.

"Katha Kahi Ek Jale Ped" not only comments on contemporary political and social environments but also portrays the chronicle of life. It weaves together various desires, how a person`s individuality is separate from society, and the social questions and boundaries that surround it. It can be seen as a constant struggle to break free from these enclosures, only to be ensnared by them repeatedly. This captivity is born out of the conflicts between power and the artist, just as it is fueled by personal ambitions that persistently shape a person`s life.

The character “Sukitorimen” may not speak much, but the is most vocal character in this play who repeatedly attempts to break the social boundaries but ends up entrapping himself within those very confines. The ”Bandaron ki Rani”, who is extremely intelligent is also surrounded by similar human weaknesses. She desires victory over death by any means necessary and is willing to fight against all odds to achieve it.

In essence, if we were to sum it up in the playwright`s words: "But if you ever come across those who have seen this story, pay attention to any strange or peculiar marks or scratches on cave walls or the trunks of old, withered trees. Remember “Sukitorimen”. If you can`t recall his name, that`s fine; just fill your imagination with the feelings that were in that artist`s mind, feelings that could not be expressed in words, and think about the endless struggle that persists between the forces of life and death. That should be enough."
