Hamida Bai Ki Kothi is a story rooted in the classical Tawaif tradition of India. Hamida Bai was an accomplished tawaif whose gayaki was considered unmatched and unparalleled in her time. Her kothi earned not only fame and recognition but also rutba (status) and adab (respect), holding a place of the highest regard in society.
With the passage of time, circumstances changed. The advent of gramophones and cinema transformed the entertainment landscape. Audiences gradually moved away from expensive kothis toward more affordable entertainment within their homes. For Hamida Bai, recording her voice was a sin she held an unwavering belief in the originality bestowed upon her by the Almighty.
Slowly, the grandeur of the kothi begins to collapse. Saida, the leading singer-dancer, leaves the kothi, and Hamida Bai is left alone, burdened by her uncompromising ethics. Financial distress and illness surround her.
At this moment, her daughter Shabbo whom Hamida Bai had deliberately kept away from this world and sent to a hostel for education returns home after months of unpaid fees. Hamida Bai succumbs to illness, leaving behind a poignant question:
Will Shabbo be able to restore the lost dignity and legacy of Hamida Bai Ki Kothi?
