Conceived and choreographed by Kathak doyen Shama Bhate, ‘Chaturang Ki Chaupal’ is a unique presentation by Pune-based dance school Nadroop that will take the audience through a range of primal emotions. Chaturang is an old and rare form of Indian classical music comprising four components — tarana, sargam, sahitya, and rhythmic syllables intricately woven together. This performance, which bears all the hallmarks of Shama Bhate’s incredible virtuosity (tayyari) and sensitive expressions (abhinaya), plays out to four different chaturangs from four different ragas — Yaman, Jaijawanti, Adana and Bhairavi. Like in the game of ‘chaupal’, the chaturangs compete with and challenge each other as they proceed to form a beautiful union, giving the visually decadent dance performance its incredible range and mood. Being the principal disciple of Kathak doyen Rohini Bhate and taalyogi Pt. Sureshji Talwalkar, Shama’s own body of work spans 50 years as a performer, teacher, choreographer, artistic director and thinker.
