The tradition of story telling and recitation has been practiced in our country since time immemorial and we can say that all theatrical processes have there origin in telling story in song or making them more interesting by enacting them as scene. From the beginning the tradition of story telling has been dependent on singing. the whole narrative or incident were presented in a musical arrangement consisting of one or many performers. The emphasis was not so much on performance as on the nuances of singing. Over a period of time body movement, gestures and postures started playing a significant role in this, so that the audience had a visual as well as a aural experience. Then to make it more interesting the performer started developing the body movement according to the characters as well as using dialogues. This entertaining form was known by many names such as Kathaa-Gaayan, Kathaa-Goyee, Kissa-Faroshee, Baat-Poshee.....etc. One of the most interesting aspect of this performing art is Solo performance, in which one performer engages an audience for hours in telling a story and takes the help of song to develop the plot and characters. He or she sings and plays different characters alone..

One of important aspect is the transition from singing to talking and vice versa which makes it a very enjoyable process for the viewer. It also allows the performer to explore his or her full potential not only as an actor but also as a singer and proves to be a very challenging role. In this form, physical abilities of the performer are put to the all most test because he or she has only two tools to keep the audience engaged. "The body and The voice". This age old tradition is fast disappearing. there was a time when this kind of tradition was popular in every region of the country with its own regional name. But today there are few areas where performer of this form still survive and people at large have hardly any information about it.
