Andher Nagari is a very famous satirical one-act play written by Bharatendu Harishchandra which takes a deep dig at the British rule in India. During the time of Bharatendu Harishchandra, it was not possible to criticize the British directly. That's why he exposed them through sarcasm. In Andher Nagari, a kingdom where the king is completely rude and stupid, the king has kept an equal price for everything in his kingdom. Everything is available there for one rupee.
A wandering saint comes to that kingdom with his disciple. When he comes to know the reality of the kingdom, he immediately decides to leave the city and advises his disciple to do the same. But the disciple, greedy for sweets, ignores his words and decides to stay there.
When a goat dies by being buried under someone's wall, the goat's mistress pleads for justice from the king. The idiot king starts blaming the owner of the wall, the artisan, Bhishti and the Kotwal and finally orders the Kotwal to be hanged. When the Kotwal does not fit on the noose, he orders to hang a person whose neck can fit on the noose. Hence the disciple is to be hanged. Can his Guru save him? Will the people get freedom from the idiot king?
