In 1987, 18-year old Roop Kanwar committed Sati in Deorala, a village in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. The event attracted the attention of the media nation-wide and all top ranking officials, including Rajiv Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of India then, condemned the event. Author Mala Sen wrote a book and listed out all the assumptions behind this incident. Right from being drugged by the in-laws to the inappropriate demands of dowry, every possible reason was assumed.
But what was the actual situation which led Roop Kanwar to commit Sati? Politicians from the region were jailed and police constables were suspended. Yet they were acquitted later as there was no proper evidence found. DEORALA 1987 looks back at the event and goes beyond the media reporting of the incident to understand what might have actually happened.
