Adapted from Anton Chekhov’s vaudeville, THE PROPOSAL, RAMAN BHAMAN is a two-act play in which the comedy comes across as being larger than life. The characters in the play are angry at the failure of others to recognize their own claims be they for money, for land or for an elevated social status.

The characters’ anger for each other makes them loose their ability to control their destinies and does not even let them recognize their own interests. The characters are simply reduced to being inflexible and unthinking creatures because of their blind passion.

Although Chekhov is famous for his longer, serious plays, his one-act plays such as THE PROPOSAL, also known as THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL are indicative of his ability to observe the frailties of humankind. The play as such explores the tendencies of rich people to seek their own kind through marriage so as to ensure each other’s economic status. Farces were popular in Chekhov’s time and this play is a good example of the same.
