'VHAY, I AM SAVITRIBAI PHULE' is a play based on the lives of the 19th-century educators and social reformers, Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. Savitribai and Jyotiba Phule are considered pioneers of social movements related to casteism, gender equality, women’s education, child adoption, farming, and more. . Through the play, Savitribai herself speaks to the audience of today. She talks about the history of their collective work in the 19th century while critiquing today’s conditions by asking questions to the audience. This is a true story of the extraordinary husband and wife pair of the 19th century of Maharashtra, India. It presents their lives, their relationship, and their fight with the society against injustice. Savitri and Jyotiba’s life story is inspiring, dramatic, and full of insightful incidents. The way Jyotiba started the first school for girls in the 19th Century! How Jyotiba taught his wife Savitri who was illiterate before marriage and how she became the first woman teacher of India... How they started the Balhatya Pratibandhak Gruh (Infanticide Prevention Home) and helped with the deliveries of Brahmin widows in their own house. How they had organized the Barber’s strike in those difficult times and why they did so! The life span presented in the play ranges from Savitribai’s childhood until her death. In this play, Jyotiba and Savitri are portrayed as human beings and not as mighty historical figures. Savitri is a vibrant representation of Indian womanhood. The drama aims to try and understand how Jyotiba and Savitri fought the hardships in their life for the betterment of society.
