Directed by Sumantra Ghoshal, ‘The Unseen Sequence’ comprises exclusively filmed performances, historical re-creations and in-depth interviews that explore not just the history of the dance but also the connections and departures that Malavika makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition.
Presented by director Sumantra Ghoshal and the film’s lead Malavika Sarukkai, the screening of this film will be followed by an interactive session that will encourage viewers to engage with both dance and filmmaking. It will be anecdotal to take the audience behind the scenes to catch a glimpse of the rigor and discipline that goes into the artistic process.
For over 25 years, Sumantra Ghoshal has had a career in the world of commercials.
However, after retiring from the world of advertising, he turned to the
documentary format, with a special focus on films about the arts. Noteworthy among these are: ‘The Speaking Hand’ (based on the tabla maestro Zakir Hussain), ‘The Unseen Sequence’ (based on prolific Bharatanatyam dancer (Malavika Sarukkai), and ‘Kaifinama’ (on the Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi).
