EQUUS (Playhouse Production) Story :

EQUUS, derived from the Latin word for ‘Horse,’ is a psychological drama that delves deep into the mind’s most primal corners. Written in 1973, this English “whydunit” is inspired by a real-life event, unravelling the mystery behind a shocking act of violence. Seventeen-year-old Alan, in a moment of frenzied passion, stabs and blinds four horses. The story follows Martin Dysart, a children’s psychiatrist, who begins treating Alan, only to find himself grappling with his own inner turmoil. As the investigation unfolds, Dysart confronts unsettling truths about the nature of normalcy, worship, and desire. In this re-imagining, the play explores Carl Jung’s theory of the ‘Shadow Self,’ using the evocative art of Shadow Theatre to bring the darkest parts of the psyche into the light. Alan’s religious, emotional, and sexual obsession with horses becomes a vehicle for questioning human extremes—what we repress, what we worship, and what ultimately makes us who we are.
