We have heard of several instances of books turning into movies. The scenario here is quite the opposite. Acclaimed film-maker, Mahesh Bhatt wrote a screenplay for Hamari Adhuri Kahaani - which hit cinemas in June this year - which inspired him to write a book, All That Could Have Been. He co-authored the book with Suhrita Sengupta.
Incidentally the book reached the stands in February this year, couple of months before the movie. The story is inspired by Bhatt's parents, and revolves around Vasudha, who is the protagonist. A 20-something woman is abandoned months after her marriage by her husband with a child in her lap. She then tries to fight the world, and raise her child at the same time. Love knocks on her door again, and she falls head over heels with a rich hotelier. They, together, try to face her dark past. Now, twist in the plot. After watching the movie and reading the book, we can now watch it playing live on stage.
Taking the book as the starting point, Happy Ranajit, a National School of Drama graduate, is adapting it for the stage. The play has already toured Delhi, Lahore and Kolkata. The book was applauded for its fast-paced narrative and dialogue, and the movie was appreciated for the music. Ranajit has tried to incorporate these two elements by retaining some of the dialogues from the book and incorporating Sufi music by a Pakistani band called Raeth. Even Bhatt has rendered his voice for the title track of the play. He says that the play essentially retains the themes of the book that is a single mother's journey through life; it also goes beyond in terms of exploring her loneliness and solitude.
HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI is being staged at the Tata Theatre on 26th December, 7.30pm.
