Gaurav SinghThe most hilarious play you have ever seen

HAMLET THE CROWN PRINCE. It was humorous, with a very innovative script and impeccable acting. The use of gibberish was hilarious. The perfect body language of actors in the play and the style in which the unwritten text is conveyed makes it enthralling and spellbinding.

How do you regard the Mumbai theater scene?

When it comes to theatre in different, regional languages, Mumbai has been at the forefront. But when it comes to plays in Hindi and English, most of us seem to find solace in the experimental category. Our canvasses could be bigger and we could cater to a larger audience.

Your favourite play-character...

Vijay Tendulkar's Sakharam Binder. The character is so strong and complex. He is a man who doesn't believe in societal norms. He is opportunistic and a tyrant master who demands satisfaction for his sexual needs from all the women he provides shelter to. At the end he falls into a trap of one such woman and becomes the victim. This makes his strong character also vulnerable.

Your favourite playwright...

Mohan Rakesh. His plays resonate with diverse emotions, at times throwing us out of our comfort zone. In most of his plays he delves deep into the man woman relationship and finds that they are the cause of each other's happiness and misery. He wrote about aspiration and was a great storyteller. His placement of words in a sentence makes his writing compelling and thought provoking.

Can you think of a foreign production that you find remarkable and why?

It would be WAR HORSE based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo and produced by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company. I was completely blown away by it. It was an amazing show with great puppetry. I was on the edge of the seat throughout the play. The thing that I loved most about the show was that it had so much thrill and fear. The suspense and anticipation of what going to happen next was really frightening and amazing. It was a spectacular artistic production which still haunts me.
