The play is named after a magazine started by Raghunath Dhondo Karve and his wife Malati in the 1920s which aimed to educate adults about sexuality. R. D. Karve started the first birth control clinic in Mumbai. The magazine was accused of obscene content numerous times by conservative groups.
Despite being socially ostracised Karve continued to publish the magazine uninterrupted for 27 years and fought four exhausting legal battles.
