Mister Behram explores the complex relationship between a mentor and his disciple. It takes place in the 1890s when India was under British rule. The play centres around Mister Behram- a renowned and respected Parsi lawyer. He adopts a tribal boy called Nhanu (a Warli tribal in South Gujarat), names him Naval and educates him. For Naval, Mister Behram is God, friend, philosopher and guide. But for Mister Behram, Naval is everything: his pride, future and his possession. Behram sees himself in Naval and at the same time, envies him. When Naval comes of age, he and Behram's daughter Dolly fall in love and want to get married. Liberal minded Behram willingly complies at a time when the caste system, was rigidly observed and rarely questioned.
