South Mumbai audiences can now enjoy theatre performances in Hindi at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's auditorium in Girgaum, Chowpatty. The auditorium is known to host Gujarati theatre performances but it now seeks to promote plays in other languages too.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is already well-known for its Hindi one-act play competition pioneered by Bhavan's Kala Kendra and was earlier known to host plays in English and in other languages too. In fact it was a platform for aspiring talent in theatre. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and its drama competitions would figure prominently in a chronicle of Mumbai's theatre history.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has completed 75 years. Last December saw the 125th Birth Anniversary of Bhavan's founder Dr K M Munshi. Bhavan is celebrating this event through the year. As part of the celebration, the auditorium (Kanji Khetsey Sabhagriha) has been completely renovated with up-to-date facilities for performers and audiences.
Last Month, actor and director Manoj Joshi had staged his Hindi Play CHANAKYA and the response was overwhelming. On April 27 and 28 this month, director Salim Arif will stage his Hindi plays - ARRE O HENRY, written by Gulzar and HUM SAFAR written by Javed Siddiqui.
Theatre groups are invited to perform Hindi, English and Marathi plays, including plays for children at Bhavan's auditorium.
